Szijjártó: Central Asia ‘very Important’ Bridge for East and West

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said countries in Central Asia had a “very important” role to play as a “bridge” between East and West at a forum of the United Nations Special Program for the Economies of Central Asia in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan, last week, according to a post on his Facebook page.

Szijjarto pointed to the need for a “reliable and safe” transit route between Europe and China and said Hungary was ready to contribute to infrastructure developments and digitalization in the region, as well as contribute to addressing water-related challenges.

He acknowledged that more politicians in Europe were using the words “decoupling” and “de-risking,” which he said were “polite” expressions for isolating the Eastern and Western economies from each other and “more precisely the isolation of the European and the Chinese economies.”

For Hungary, East-West cooperation is not a danger but a “huge chance,” he added.
