Punishment for Indecent Acts Against Minors Has Been Tightened in Tajikistan

The Parliament of Tajikistan has approved amendments to the Criminal Code, which toughen penalties for indecent acts against minors.

In accordance with the new paragraph of Article 142 of the Criminal Code “Depraved acts”, which the editorial staff of Radio Ozodi has read, for “depraved acts against two or more persons known to be under fourteen years of age”, the perpetrator will be imprisoned for a term of five to eight years .

Previously, for indecent acts against a person known to be under fourteen years of age, the perpetrators were punished by imprisonment for a term of two to five years.

In addition to imprisonment, the court can now also permanently deprive perpetrators of such crimes of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities.

Previously, the court could deprive perpetrators of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for a period of only up to three years.

In recent years, reports of indecent assault and sexual abuse of minors have become increasingly common in the media. Two years ago, a case of rape of a 12-year-old girl by her 42-year-old cousin in Gissar caused a huge public outcry on social networks.

Then the court of this city, literally in one court session, sentenced the culprit to five years in prison and immediately released him from the courtroom under the pretext that he was eligible for an amnesty.

After the public demanded a review of the case, the Supreme Court overturned the verdict and sentenced the man to prison.
