The authorities of Tajikistan have adopted amendments to the country’s Criminal Code, toughening penalties for committing indecent acts against minors.
The Parliament of Tajikistan has approved changes to the country’s Criminal Code, which provide for tougher punishment for indecent acts against minors, ASIA-Plus reports.
President Emomali Rahmon signed the amended law on November 13.
As the publication notes, the amendments affected Article 142 (indecent acts) of the Criminal Code, which was supplemented with a third part. It, in particular, provides for punishment for committing indecent acts of violence against two or more persons clearly under the age of fourteen. This will result in imprisonment from 5 to 8 years with lifelong deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or conduct certain activities.
ASIA-Plus adds that crimes involving indecent assault or rape of minors are “extremely rare” in Tajikistan. This happens because the relatives of the victims hide such facts in order to avoid social isolation of the victim and her parents in traditional Tajik society, the publication emphasizes.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tajikistan, 49 violent acts of a sexual nature against minors were registered in the country last year. In 2021, 57 cases were recorded.
