Kazakhstan Refused to Nominate the Film for This Year’s Oscars

This was stated by producer and member of the Union of Cinematographers of Kazakhstan Kanat Torebay

Producer and member of the Union of Cinematographers of Kazakhstan Kanat Torebay said that the country will not nominate its film for the Oscar in the category “Best Foreign Language Film.” This was reported by Orda.

It is alleged that only four films submitted applications for participation in the selection – MIMICRY, MOUNTAIN BOW, TRAINING OF ADEMOKA and BAUYRYN SALU, but the Oscar committee of Kazakhstan, for unknown reasons, refused to consider the first two applications.

Between the two remaining tapes, the votes were distributed as follows: two committee members voted for TRAINING ADEMOKA, one for BAUYRYN SALU, and four more abstained. In this regard, the decision was made to refuse to participate in this year’s award.

It is worth noting that industry professionals from the very beginning named another film as a possible favorite – HAPPINESS (Bakyt) by Askar Uzabaev, which received the audience award in the “Panorama” section of last year’s Berlinale.

The producer of the film, Bayan Alaguzova, said that the committee at the Union of Cinematographers of Kazakhstan did not notify her about the start of the selection, and noted that the composition of the Oscar commission is generally unknown to the country’s film community. “We don’t even know their last names,” she said. – They are not even published, they are not on the Internet. Who are these people who promote Kazakh films every year?”

Let us remind you that Russia will also not nominate the film for the Oscar this year, and the work of the country’s Oscar committee has been suspended.
