The Kyrgyz side is serious about resolving issues related to disputed areas on the common section of the border with Tajikistan. This was stated in Bishkek at the people’s kurultai (congress) by the head of the Kyrgyz state, Sadyr Japarov.
According to him, official Bishkek is taking all necessary measures to resolve this problem. At the same time, the president recalled that the presence of disputed territories on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border leads to “collisions and losses” among the military personnel and the population of the border areas. Zhaparov also recalled that at the moment the republic has completed the process of demarcation and delimitation of the state border with all neighboring countries – Uzbekistan, China and Kazakhstan. The only exception to this list is Tajikistan.
The length of the border between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, according to TASS , is almost 980 km, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, dozens of disputed sections remained on it. Currently, in the process of delimitation and demarcation of the border, according to various estimates, about 700-800 km have been described. Due to the presence of disputed areas on the border of the two republics, conflicts periodically arise between military personnel and the local population, including with the use of weapons. The last clash took place in the early autumn of this year, more than 60 people died in the armed conflict on the Kyrgyz side.
